Kensal Crossrail Regeneration Study

A new study has highlighted the potential regeneration benefits of the proposed Crossrail Station at Kensal in west London. The study has been produced by Regeneris Consulting on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Crossrail is the new £16bn, high frequency railway for London and the South East. Currently expected to open in 2019, the line will connect Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east and will run via the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf. In 2009, Regeneris Consulting was commissioned to help the LDA to identify and secure the wider regeneration benefits that Crossrail could provide across London as a whole. At this juncture, the Crossrail proposals did not include provision for a station at Kensal in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. However, over the subsequent two years, local support and lobbying for the provision of a station at Kensal has grown considerably.

In this context, Regeneris Consulting was appointed to examine the possible regeneration benefits of the proposed Crossrail station at Kensal. The study replicates the research conducted in the original study, providing an assessment of how the regeneration case for a station at Kensal compares to that seen at other locations along the Crossrail route. The study concludes that the regeneration case for a station at Kensal is strong and that there is scope to achieve significant lasting regeneration benefits in the hinterland of the proposed station.

The findings of the study are being used by the Royal Borough Kensington and Chelsea as they continue to lobby their case for a station at Kensal.
