London Street Markets Research

There are 193 street markets in London which are varied in the range of produce they sell, the types of customers they serve and the way they are organised and managed. We were asked to provide a spatial and economic analysis of the retail street markets in London and to identify how they can be supported.

The study reviewed all types of retail street markets, including those selling food, clothing, and arts. We carried out a survey of market traders to understand their performance and economic impact locally. We also carried out economic research to understand the scale and nature of the market. 

We found that although many individual markets are thriving, there are some indications of decline across London. Our work identified actions to address issues associated with decline and provides an evidence base to inform responses from the public sector.
